About vBulletin

A forum is not a website in the ordinary sense. A forum is a community with an owner, a moderation team, years of accumulated posts and a migration cost that grows every month, and that is what makes the population running vBulletin unlike most software footprints we publish.

The software first shipped in 2000, written in PHP and sold as a Proprietary product by vBulletin Solutions, at a point when running a discussion board meant buying a license and installing it on your own server. Communities that formed around it stayed for a long time. Hobbyist boards, sports and gaming communities, professional associations and support forums built their archives inside it, and archives are the reason owners tolerate aging software long after fashion has moved on. Ownership of a paid license also means each of these sites once had a budget line and a named administrator, which is unusual at the free end of the Message boards world.

Version data is where the population gets genuinely interesting. Across live installations we record 110 distinct versions, with 5.7.0 the release our detection currently returns most often. A spread that wide across a single commercial product tells you that upgrading is hard, that many boards are effectively frozen at whatever release was current when the last competent administrator left, and that the long tail holds installations several major releases behind. For a security researcher the spread is the whole story, because forum software is a persistent target and unpatched boards with open registration are exactly where that matters. For a vendor selling migration, hosting or managed upgrades, the same spread is a qualification tool. An old release on a busy domain is a customer with a problem they already know about.

We should be clear about what the version field can and cannot support. Boards can be told to suppress the generator markup and templates can be edited to remove it, so version evidence exists for some installations and is absent for others, and the absent ones are more likely than average to be the deliberately hardened ones. Sites behind a login wall or a reverse proxy that strips headers escape detection altogether. So both the total and the version distribution should be read as observed evidence rather than as a complete inventory of every board on the internet.

As of September 2026 we detect the platform on 2,150 sites, a mature and slowly shrinking population rather than a growing one. Shrinking populations have their own commercial logic. Every domain on the list is a decision waiting to happen, between paying to keep going, migrating to a hosted community platform, or letting the archive go read only. Competing forum products, community services, managed hosting providers and security teams all want the same file for different reasons, and none of them can build it by checking domains one at a time. A single lookup answers whether one board runs the software. The download answers which boards run which release, in which country and on whose infrastructure, and that is the version of the question that leads to a decision.
