About Popup Maker

A popup is a commercial decision wearing a technical costume. Somebody looked at a page, decided that a passive visitor was a wasted visitor, and installed software to interrupt them in exchange for an email address. Finding that software on a site tells you the owner has moved past publishing and into acquisition, which is a much more useful thing to know than which theme they run.

Popup Maker is the WordPress plugin that does this job for a large slice of the self-hosted web. Catalogued under Code Atlantic and first released in 2014 under GPL v2, written in PHP, it provides the overlay itself plus the targeting and triggering layer around it: show this to logged-out visitors, on these URLs, after a scroll depth or a delay or an exit gesture, and connect the result to a form builder, an email service or a store.

As of September 2026 we detect the plugin on 33,987 sites in the WordPress plugins category. 13,620 of them are in United States and .com is the dominant suffix, which fits a tool bought by small and mid-sized businesses running their own marketing rather than by enterprises with a purchased stack.

Release history separates it from most of what sits in a plugin directory. 131 distinct versions appear across the population and 1.24.0 is the one we see most often, the signature of a plugin still under active development on a site population that mostly lets updates land. Active development plus a population that installs updates matters when you are judging whether a marketing surface is maintained or merely present, because a site running current plugin code is a site somebody logs into.

The inference chain from there is short and commercially direct. A live popup implies lead capture, lead capture implies a destination for those leads, and a destination implies an email platform, a CRM or at minimum a spreadsheet somebody checks. Sites in this population are already spending attention on conversion, which makes them qualified prospects for email services, testing and analytics tools, form and checkout products, and agencies selling conversion work. They are equally interesting in the other direction to anyone researching how aggressively the small-business web interrupts its visitors and how consent requirements are being handled in practice.

Detection deserves a caveat. The plugin can be installed and configured to fire only on certain pages, for certain visitors or after a delay, and we see a page as a crawler sees it, so activity is not something the presence of the plugin proves. Optimisation and caching layers that strip or rename plugin assets can also hide an active install. The list is best read as sites that have the capability deployed, with the intensity of use left as a separate question that other columns and a sample crawl can help answer.

A per-domain lookup confirms one site runs the plugin. The download gives the population: how many sites have committed to interruption-based lead capture, which countries and suffixes they sit in, which release line they are on, and how much of the cohort turns over between refreshes. Sizing a market and building an outreach list are both population problems, and neither is solvable one domain at a time.
