About MyBlogLog

The markup is still in the page. The service it points at stopped answering a long time ago. What our crawler matches on when it reports MyBlogLog is a widget and a tracking snippet that a blogger pasted into a sidebar template during the period when showing your recent readers as a row of avatars was a thing people did, and the snippet has simply stayed there ever since, inert, through years of the page being served unchanged.

What it measures is neglect, in the precise and useful sense of pages whose templates have not been touched since the tooling around them was retired. For a researcher that is a genuinely useful marker, and it is one of the more honest things a technology dataset can offer. Anyone studying web decay, link rot, or the long tail of abandoned publishing wants a way to isolate pages that are frozen rather than merely quiet, and a dead third party widget does that job better than a date in a sitemap, which is trivially regenerated. The tag was a Proprietary product from an era beginning around 2005, so its presence also dates the template it sits in fairly tightly.

Two cautions. Some matches are copies rather than choices, because the snippet travelled inside blog themes that were shared and reused, so the original owner may never have signed up for anything. And any site that has since cleaned dead scripts out of its head drops out of our count, which means the list understates abandonment rather than overstating it. Read it as a sample of frozen pages, not a census of them.
