About Site Meter

Nobody adds a visitor counter to a website any more, which is exactly why the ones still there are worth counting. Site Meter dates to 1997, belongs to the era of personal homepages and early blogging, and was displaced long ago by hosted analytics that ask nothing of the page and show nothing to the visitor. A site still carrying the JavaScript snippet today is usually not measuring anything at all. Nobody removed it.

Which makes the list useful for a purpose the original vendor never intended. An abandoned Analytics tag is a strong proxy for a page that has not been edited in a very long time, and abandonment travels in company. Unpatched software underneath, contact addresses that no longer answer, ownership that has quietly changed or lapsed, and outbound references to hosts that nobody in particular controls any more. As of September 2026 we record the snippet on 4,926 sites, and the interesting property of that set is not the tool but the age of the pages still carrying it.

Two limits belong on the label. The first is that a crawler records an embed, not a working service, and whether the vendor still returns data for a given account is not something the customer's page can establish. The service ran on a Freemium model, and the visible counter badge attached to its unpaid tier stopped being a live market a long time ago. The second is that the badge image and the loader could be removed independently of each other, so any single detection rule sees one part of the picture and misses another.

Researchers measuring web decay, security teams hunting stale third party includes, domain investors looking for properties whose owners have stopped paying attention, and agencies prospecting for redesign work all want the same output, which is the whole set with domains attached. A per-domain lookup confirms one relic. A population of relics is a map of where the maintained web ends and the abandoned web begins, and that boundary is not visible from any single page.
