About jQuery Modal

Small dependencies say more about a codebase than large ones do. jQuery Modal performs a single job, which is to lay a dialog box over the page and dim whatever sits behind it, and the plugin does that job in a few kilobytes of JavaScript riding on top of jQuery. Nobody evaluates a library like that. Somebody needed a modal on a Tuesday afternoon, found a file that worked, pasted it in, moved on, and the file has been sitting in the page template ever since.

A library under active maintenance shows a tail that drifts steadily toward the newest version as people upgrade. The distribution here is closer to a plateau, because the release people installed is the release that still works, and the project never crossed into a stable major version that would have prompted anyone to revisit the decision.

So the plugin functions as a dating tool. Anything carrying it is running jQuery, which by itself places the front end in a particular era, and the pinned release narrows the window further. Published from 2012 under the MIT license with no company standing behind it, the project has no vendor to send an upgrade notice, no telemetry, no support contract and no renewal date. An installation persists until somebody rewrites the page for reasons that have nothing to do with the modal.

Persistence of that kind is what makes the population commercially interesting rather than trivia. Unmaintained front-end dependencies are where cross-site scripting reports come from, where accessibility audits stall, and where a security questionnaire from an enterprise customer gets stuck for a month. Anyone selling dependency scanning, front-end modernization, penetration testing or a straightforward audit is looking for exactly this shape of evidence: an old, pinned, unowned file running in production on a domain that belongs to a real business with real customers.

United States accounts for 9,602 of the domains and .com recurs throughout, though geography means less for a copy-and-paste dependency than for a purchased product. A file spreads through tutorials, forum answers and inherited templates, and those travel further than any sales territory.

Detection depends on the file being served under a recognizable name and path. A bundler that inlines the plugin into one application file, a build step that renames it, or a minifier that strips its header will hide it completely, so the real number is higher than the one we report and skews toward simpler, older builds.

Asking whether a given domain loads this plugin is a browser inspection anyone can do in a minute. Asking which domains load it, at which version, beside which other libraries and on which hosting, is a crawl of the web, and the answer exists only as a file.
