About Fork Awesome

Icon sets are chosen once, by whoever built the theme, and then inherited by everyone who uses it. Fork Awesome exists because of a licensing change rather than a technical one. When the icon library it descends from moved toward a commercial model, part of the community forked the earlier freely licensed release and carried on maintaining it. As of September 2026 we detect the fork on 2,925 sites.

The licence is MIT, delivery is a web font with CSS class names, and no company stands behind the project. Governance of that sort attracts a particular kind of adopter. The set added icons the upstream project had no commercial reason to ship, including marks for federated social software and libre tooling, so the library travels with self hosted, community run and public sector work more often than with commercial templates. A detection of it is rarely a decision by the site owner. Far more often it is a fingerprint of the theme, generator or template the site was built from.

We resolve 30 distinct version strings for Fork Awesome, and the reading returned across a broad part of the footprint is 1.2.0. Version data here comes from asset paths and file names rather than from anything the library announces at runtime, which is a real limitation and worth stating. A project that vendored the files into its own bundle, renamed them, or serves them from a shared static host can resolve as present with no version at all, and a path can keep an old label after the file behind it has been replaced. The versioned subset is informative about the rest, not a complete census of it.
