About Backdrop
A fork is a statement about an upgrade path. Backdrop exists because a group of developers looked at where Drupal was heading and decided that the cost of following it was higher than the cost of maintaining an alternative. Since 2013 the project has kept a familiar architecture for site builders who did not want to relearn one. The code is PHP, the licence is GPL v2, and the direction belongs to a volunteer community rather than to a company.
The absence of a vendor matters when you read the numbers. Nobody is selling seats, running a sales team or publishing customer counts, so a crawl of the open web is one of the few ways to observe how many organisations actually run the software. The version picture is unusually simple. Across the detected installs the version field never varies, and the value we read on every one of them is 1. Flatness of that kind is a property of the detection rather than a claim about the code.
