Backdrop CMS is a free, open-source content management system forked from Drupal 7 in 2013 with the goal of providing a simpler, more accessible CMS for small to medium-sized organizations that found Drupal 8's increased complexity a barrier. It maintains a familiar Drupal-like architecture while incorporating modern improvements and a gentler upgrade path.

Backdrop CMS is developed and maintained by a community of volunteers and targets nonprofits, educational institutions, government agencies, and small businesses. It ships with a rich set of core features — including flexible content types, views, layouts, and multi-language support — that would require contributed modules in Drupal. The project emphasizes backwards compatibility and predictable upgrade cycles to reduce the total cost of ownership for its target audience.
