Most technology detections identify how a site was built. A donation platform identifies what kind of organisation is behind it. Donorbox exists to collect one-off and recurring gifts, so a domain that embeds it is almost certainly a charity, a church, a school foundation, an association or a campaign, and the inference is about the owner rather than about the code.

Sector identification is otherwise a hard problem on the open web. Domain names do not reliably indicate purpose, registries record the wrong thing, and nonprofit registers cover one jurisdiction at a time and rarely include a website field. A payment integration that only one type of organisation ever installs solves the problem sideways. The embedded form is the tell, and it is visible without any privileged access.

Donorbox has run the service since 2012 on a Freemium model, and the pricing shapes what a count of installations means. Free tiers are adopted casually, so the population includes very small organisations that would never surface in a commercial database, sitting alongside larger ones running serious fundraising programmes. The list skews toward the long tail, which is exactly the part of the sector that is hardest to enumerate by any other method.

Many organisations link out to a hosted giving page instead of embedding the form, in which case the platform lives on a different hostname and the charity own domain shows nothing at all. Others load the form only after a visitor clicks a donate button, and a crawler that never clicks never sees it. Where the integration is absent from the delivered page, we do not record it.

The people who want this file are usually selling to the sector rather than studying it. Fundraising consultancies, donor management vendors, grant platforms and payment competitors all need a list of organisations that have already decided to accept money online, which is a far better qualified audience than a register of registered charities. Checking a single domain answers a question you could answer by scrolling its homepage. A complete extract answers how many organisations in a country accept online gifts at all, how that has shifted between crawls, and which of them run one platform rather than another.
