Backdrop CMS est un système de gestion de contenu gratuit et open source, dérivé de Drupal 7 en 2013, avec pour objectif de fournir un CMS plus simple et plus accessible aux organisations de petite et moyenne taille pour qui la complexité accrue de Drupal 8 constituait un obstacle. Il conserve une architecture familière proche de celle de Drupal tout en intégrant des améliorations modernes et un chemin de mise à niveau plus doux.

Backdrop CMS est développé et maintenu par une communauté de bénévoles et cible les associations à but non lucratif, les établissements d’enseignement, les organismes publics et les petites entreprises. Il est livré avec un riche ensemble de fonctionnalités de base (types de contenu flexibles, vues, mises en page et prise en charge multilingue notamment) qui nécessiteraient des modules contribués dans Drupal. Le projet met l’accent sur la rétrocompatibilité et des cycles de mise à niveau prévisibles afin de réduire le coût total de possession pour son public cible.
