Backdrop CMS ist ein kostenloses Open-Source-Content-Management-System, das 2013 als Fork von Drupal 7 mit dem Ziel entstand, kleinen und mittleren Organisationen, für die die gestiegene Komplexität von Drupal 8 ein Hindernis darstellte, ein einfacheres und zugänglicheres CMS zu bieten. Es behält eine vertraute, Drupal-ähnliche Architektur bei und integriert dabei moderne Verbesserungen sowie einen sanfteren Upgrade-Pfad.
Backdrop CMS wird von einer Community aus Freiwilligen entwickelt und gepflegt und richtet sich an gemeinnützige Organisationen, Bildungseinrichtungen, Behörden und kleine Unternehmen. Es bringt einen umfangreichen Satz an Kernfunktionen mit, darunter flexible Content-Typen, Views, Layouts und Mehrsprachigkeit, die in Drupal zusätzliche Contributed Modules erfordern würden. Das Projekt legt Wert auf Abwärtskompatibilität und vorhersehbare Update-Zyklen, um die Gesamtbetriebskosten für seine Zielgruppe zu senken.
