A review widget is unusual among third party embeds because the site owner is not trying to hide it. Analytics, tag managers and fraud tools are placed to be invisible. Trustpilot is placed to be seen, in the footer, beside the checkout button and on the pricing page, because the entire point is to move a hesitant visitor over the line using evidence gathered somewhere else.

Deciding to show it is a commercial decision with a precondition. A company only embeds a rating it is willing to publish, which means it has accumulated a review volume worth displaying and a score it is not embarrassed by, and it means someone owns the relationship with the platform and pays for the tier that unlocks the widgets. Absence is therefore ambiguous in an interesting way. A company may have no profile at all, or it may have one it would rather visitors did not read.

The commercial profile that follows is narrow and useful. Sites carrying the widget are almost always transactional: retail, subscriptions, travel, insurance, financial services and comparison sites, where conversion rate is measured and social proof is treated as a lever rather than a nicety. Presence also implies a marketing function mature enough to run review collection as a process, usually with automated post purchase requests wired into the order pipeline.

As of September 2026 the widget is detectable on 112,478 sites, 50,145 of them in United States, and the domain mix concentrates in .com. The platform launched in 2007 from Denmark on Proprietary terms, and the fact that its JavaScript widgets now sit largely on English language commercial domains describes where the paid product was sold rather than where the company began. European consumer reviews built the platform. Cross border commerce distributed it.

Detection itself is straightforward, because the widget has to load from the platform's own infrastructure to fetch a live score, and a static picture of a rating would defeat the purpose. What detection cannot report is the score. A hit records that a company chose to publish its reputation, not what the reputation actually says, and any research design that confuses the two will draw a flattering conclusion about the wrong thing.

One domain can be checked by eye in a moment. The list answers what a browser tab cannot. Which sectors have adopted independent review proof and which still rely on testimonials they wrote themselves, how the population overlaps with particular commerce platforms and payment providers, which companies run a competing review vendor, and which transactional sites display no external proof at all and are the addressable market for anyone selling it. Aggregate presence is the finding here, never the individual embed.
