Nothing in our data describes Trac better than the spread of its versions. Across the installations we can see we record 4 distinct versions in use, and the release we encounter most often is 0.12. A codebase whose releases coexist like that is not a hosted service being upgraded centrally for everyone. Every install belongs to somebody who set it up on their own server and now upgrades it, or does not, on their own schedule.

Trac arrived in 2004 from Edgewall Software as a wiki, an issue tracker and a repository browser welded into one Python application, at a time when a software team that wanted all three either ran them itself or did without. Under the BSD licence there was no per seat cost, which is how it spread through open source projects, university groups, research labs and internal engineering teams. The tools that displaced it moved those same functions into hosted platforms, and the installs still standing are the ones nobody has had a pressing reason to migrate.

As of October 2026 we find Trac on 21 sites. A count at that level does not measure how much work is tracked inside the software, because one instance can hold an entire engineering organisation's history of tickets, milestones and commits behind a single hostname. Domain counts therefore understate both the number of people using it and the volume of history it holds.

There is a second caveat about what a public detection means. Many deployments sit on an internal network where no crawler reaches them, so the visible population is the subset facing the open web, usually because the project on it is public by intention. Detections skew towards open source infrastructure and away from private corporate use, and the private side is invisible to us rather than absent.

What survives on the public web also tells you something about the organisation running it. A team that still hosts its own tracker has kept the hardware or the virtual machine, the backups, the upgrade path and the account list in house, which is a posture rather than an oversight. Organisations with regulatory reasons to keep development records on their own infrastructure look exactly like organisations that simply never got round to moving, and only the surrounding stack separates the two.

For a researcher the version spread is the reason to take the export rather than the summary. Older releases of a self hosted Python application are a maintenance question and sometimes a security one, and knowing which hosts sit on which release is exactly what you cannot work out by visiting a site at a time. Security teams mapping exposed developer infrastructure, vendors selling hosted alternatives, and anyone studying how long self hosted tools survive after the market moves on need the population and its version breakdown together, which is what a downloadable file carries and a lookup service does not.
