Nada en nuestros datos describe Trac mejor que el reparto de sus versiones. Una base de código cuyas versiones conviven así no es un servicio alojado que se actualiza de forma centralizada para todo el mundo. Trac llegó en 2004 de la mano de Edgewall Software como un wiki, un gestor de incidencias y un navegador de repositorios soldados en una sola aplicación de Python, en una época en la que un equipo de software que quisiera las tres cosas o las operaba por su cuenta o se quedaba sin ellas. Con licencia BSD no había coste por puesto, y así es como se extendió por proyectos de código abierto, grupos universitarios, laboratorios de investigación y equipos internos de ingeniería. Las herramientas que lo desbancaron trasladaron esas mismas funciones a plataformas alojadas, y las instalaciones que siguen en pie son aquellas que nadie ha tenido un motivo urgente para migrar.

En octubre de 2026 encontramos Trac en 21 sitios. Un recuento de ese orden no mide cuánto trabajo se gestiona dentro del software, porque una sola instancia puede guardar el historial completo de incidencias, hitos y confirmaciones de toda una organización de ingeniería detrás de un único nombre de host. Por eso los recuentos de dominios subestiman a la vez el número de personas que lo usan y el volumen de historial que almacena.

Hay una segunda advertencia sobre lo que significa una detección pública. Muchos despliegues están en una red interna a la que no llega ningún rastreador, así que la población visible es el subconjunto que da a la web abierta, normalmente porque el proyecto que aloja es público a propósito. Las detecciones se inclinan hacia la infraestructura de código abierto y se alejan del uso corporativo privado, y el lado privado no está ausente, sencillamente es invisible para nosotros.

Lo que sobrevive en la web pública también dice algo sobre la organización que lo opera. Un equipo que todavía aloja su propio gestor de incidencias ha mantenido por cuenta propia el hardware o la máquina virtual, las copias de seguridad, la vía de actualización y la lista de cuentas, y eso es una postura y no un descuido. Las organizaciones con motivos regulatorios para conservar los registros de desarrollo en su propia infraestructura tienen exactamente el mismo aspecto que las organizaciones que sencillamente nunca encontraron el momento de mudarse, y solo la pila que las rodea separa a unas de otras.

Para un investigador el reparto de versiones es la razón para llevarse la exportación en lugar del resumen. Las versiones antiguas de una aplicación de Python autoalojada son una cuestión de mantenimiento y a veces de seguridad, y saber qué hosts están en qué versión es justo lo que no se puede averiguar visitando un sitio cada vez. Los equipos de seguridad que cartografían infraestructura de desarrollo expuesta, los proveedores que venden alternativas alojadas y cualquiera que estudie cuánto sobreviven las herramientas autoalojadas después de que el mercado siga adelante necesitan la población y su desglose por versiones juntos, y eso es lo que lleva un archivo descargable y no lleva un servicio de consulta.
