About SEMrush

There is a difference between software used on websites and software installed in them, and a research platform sits mostly on the wrong side of that line for a crawler. A marketing team logs in, runs keyword and backlink queries about domains it does not own, and leaves no trace whatsoever on any page. Nothing in that workflow touches the public web.

What does leave a trace is the narrow set of artefacts a customer has to place on a domain they control. A verification file or meta tag so a site audit can prove ownership, an embedded widget, a reporting or tracking integration wired into the site itself. As of October 2026 our index records 2 sites carrying a SEMrush signature, and the figure counts those visible attachments rather than the customer base of Semrush. Anyone modelling the size of the company from this column will get a badly wrong answer.

Read as a signal about the site instead, the fingerprint is genuinely informative. A domain that carries a verification artefact belongs to someone actively working on search visibility, not merely thinking about it. Semrush has been selling to that audience since 2008 under a Proprietary model, and the buyers are agencies, in house search teams and consultants who typically look after portfolios rather than one property. Finding the same attachment across unrelated domains is often a way of finding an agency relationship that nobody has published anywhere.

Which is why the population matters more than any individual match. Competing analytics and search vendors want to know which sites are already under active optimisation, since those owners have proven they will pay for tooling. Content, link building and technical audit services want the same set for the same reason. Researchers studying the agency layer of the web want to cluster domains by shared verification fingerprints, and no single lookup can reveal a cluster.

A per domain check answers whether one site has it. The download hands over the whole detected set, joinable against your own pipeline, filterable by market, and comparable between crawls so you can watch installations appear and disappear. Keep the undercount in view throughout. A platform used about websites rather than inside them will always be underrepresented in fingerprint data, and our figure should be treated as the visible remainder of a user base that mostly never touches a page we crawl.
