About Semantic UI

A front-end framework dates a website more reliably than it describes one. Semantic UI is a UI frameworks built around a specific bet, that class names should read like ordinary English so markup describes intent instead of layout, and the bet worked well enough that the framework spread through admin panels, dashboards, documentation sites and product marketing pages during the years when a component library resting on jQuery was the reasonable default.

Momentum then slowed. Work on the original project became intermittent and a community fork picked up active maintenance, which leaves the installed base in a distinctive position: working, widely deployed and no longer tracking anything upstream. Our version data shows the same story from the other side. We distinguish 15 releases and attach 2.4.2 to more detections than any other label, and a concentration of that kind is what appears when a project stops shipping and its users stop upgrading in step with it.

As of September 2026 we record Semantic UI on 20,899 sites. The framework is written in JavaScript, released under the MIT license and dates from 2013, which places its adoption curve before the build tooling and component model conventions that arrived afterwards and reshaped how interfaces get assembled.

A frozen dependency is a commercial signal as much as a technical one. A build step that renames or prunes class names, or a theme layer that wraps the framework in something of its own, can hide it completely, and version strings surface only where an unmodified distribution file is served, so a share of matches arrive with no version attached. The totals are a lower bound rather than a count of the framework's real footprint.
