About OpenWeb
A publisher who keeps comments open almost never builds the commenting system, because moderation, spam control, identity and abuse handling amount to a product in themselves and a newsroom has no reason to own that code. OpenWeb sells that product, and it arrives on a page as a third party script that replaces the native comment area with a hosted conversation module.
The name deserves a warning for anyone searching text rather than fingerprints. Open web is also an ordinary phrase in publishing, so keyword matching against page copy produces noise, while our record is a fingerprint match on the vendor embed rather than a mention. OpenWeb has run the platform since 2012 under a Proprietary licence, our catalogue records the client side as JavaScript, and the entry sits under Advertising.
What a match actually tells you is commercial rather than technical. A hosted conversation layer is a paid line item with a moderation policy attached, so a site carrying one has an audience large enough to argue in public, a monetisation interest in repeat visits and, usually, someone whose job includes community.
