About Instatus
A status page is a promise before it is a product. Somebody inside the company decided that customers would notice an outage and would expect to be told about it in public, and that decision is only made by a business whose product runs as a service. Instatus sells that page as a hosted product, launched in 2020, built in JavaScript and offered on a Freemium model that puts a working page within reach of a very small team.
So the marker qualifies a company rather than describing a stack. A domain carrying it belongs to an operator who sells software or a service with an uptime obligation, has customers organised enough to complain, and has assigned somebody to incident communication. Very little else in a technology dataset filters for commercial maturity that cleanly. Firmographic databases infer whether a company is a genuine software vendor from headcount and funding. A public status page is the company stating it directly.
Age matters here in an unusual way. Because the product itself only appeared in 2020, every installation in the list is a recent choice rather than an inherited one. Older companies tend to sit on incumbent status page tooling bought years earlier and rarely revisit it, so a population built on this vendor leans toward younger businesses that assembled their operational stack in the current generation. For teams selling monitoring, on call software, incident management or developer tooling, the skew is the reason to buy the list rather than a defect in it.
A couple of limits are worth knowing before the data is used. A status page almost always lives on its own hostname instead of on the main marketing domain, so what gets recorded is that hostname, and joining it back to the parent company is work the buyer does. Teams also point custom domains at the service, which hides the vendor from casual inspection while still leaving the fingerprint we match on, so the vendor stays identifiable even when the branding does not mention it.
