About Yoast SEO Premium
Almost everything we detect on a website is free to install. Yoast SEO Premium is not, and the difference changes what a row in this dataset means.
The plugin is the paid tier of the Yoast SEO product for WordPress, sold by Yoast BV as a subscription since 2012, and our licence field records it as GPL v3. Renewal is annual, updates depend on an active licence key, and the additional features are the ones a working marketer asks for once the free edition stops being enough: multiple target keywords per page, internal linking suggestions, a redirect manager, richer social previews. A domain carrying it has a marketing budget, an owner who has bought software specifically to improve search performance, and a business where organic traffic is assumed to matter.
As of September 2026 we detect the premium edition on 427,287 sites, 199,580 of them registered in United States, with .com carrying much of the total. A PHP runtime is required, so every domain in the set is a self hosted WordPress installation rather than a hosted page, which narrows the population again to sites able to accept commercial plugins at all.
The version field is where the list earns its keep. We can separate 374 distinct releases across the population, with current installations clustering on the 28.2 line. Because updates sit behind an active subscription, a site several releases back is not simply careless. A stale build is a plausible sign that a licence lapsed and nobody renewed it, and a current build is a sign of a customer still paying. Very little else on a public page tells you anything about the state of a software subscription.
One caveat matters more here than on most pages, because the free and paid editions share a great deal of their fingerprint. The two are separated on markers the premium build leaves in the delivered page, and that separation is inferential rather than certain. Sites whose output is heavily filtered, cached by a plugin that strips generator comments, or served through an aggressive CDN can lose the distinction entirely, and a site can hold a valid licence without the evidence ever reaching the HTML. The list should be read as sites where premium use is visible, not as a customer ledger.
With that understood the applications are obvious enough. Competing SEO vendors get a set of businesses that have already proved they will pay for search software, which is a far better prospect than a list of sites that merely rank badly. Agencies get clients who take the discipline seriously enough to buy tooling for it. Anyone sizing the WordPress commercial plugin economy needs the population rather than a sample, because the real question is what share of a country, a vertical or a registrar's book has crossed from free tooling into paid, and no amount of checking domains individually will answer it.
