Free tiers change what an adoption number means, and no reading of Hello Bar makes sense without that. The tool has been given away in limited form since 2012, and a Freemium model produces an installed base shaped nothing like a paid product's, very wide, very shallow, and full of sites that pasted the snippet once, ran a bar for a campaign and never took it off.

The product itself is deliberately simple. Hello Bar places a notification bar, a modal, a slider or a popup on a page to push visitors toward an email signup, an offer or a particular destination, with behavioural targeting and split testing behind it. Setup is a copied tag and a web dashboard, which is precisely why it spread into hands that would never install anything heavier.

As of September 2026 we detect Hello Bar on 5,065 sites, spread across blogs, small business sites, course sellers, local services and the long tail of content sites where one person owns the entire stack. Nothing in that population is enterprise, and the value of the list follows directly from the fact.

Vendors selling to small site owners read it as a directory of people who have already placed third party JavaScript on their own site. Willingness to paste a tag is a genuine qualifier, because it separates owners who can and will change their site from the much larger group who cannot, and it comes with proof that the owner is actively trying to convert traffic rather than merely publishing. Conversion, email, popup and analytics vendors are the obvious buyers of that filter. A second use is displacement, since a site sitting on a free tier is a site where an upgrade or a switch has never been sold to anyone.

The honest limit is that we measure the tag and not the account. A dormant snippet on an abandoned blog counts exactly like an active campaign, and free accounts are abandoned constantly, so the figure describes sites that adopted the tool at some point rather than sites paying for it today. Cross referencing against whether the site has been updated recently is the usual correction, and it is one the raw list supports.

Checking one domain tells you a competitor uses a popup tool. The downloadable list tells you the shape of an entire long tail market, how many owners in a niche have adopted anything at all, which tools they cluster with, and where a product priced for that tail would find people already reaching for one.
