About cState
A status page has one job the rest of a company's web presence does not, which is staying reachable while everything else is broken. The usual answer is to publish it as plain files on a separate host, far away from the application it reports on, and cState exists to do exactly that. The project is categorised here under Status pages, carries the MIT licence, is written in JavaScript and has no company behind it, only a public code repository.
The absence of a vendor is the point. Commercial status pages are bought as a subscription, so choosing a self hosted one is a deliberate decision to keep incident communication in house, usually made by a team that already publishes static sites and would rather not pay monthly for a page that is idle most of the year. As of October 2026 we detect cState on 3 sites, with records going back to 2017.
Counting those sites is less simple than it looks. Status pages nearly always live on their own hostname, separate from the main site, so a detection is a hostname belonging to an organisation rather than the organisation's primary domain, and matching one to the other is work the buyer of the data has to do. An organisation may also publish several status hosts for different products, which inflates hostnames relative to companies.
The version data has a similar wrinkle. We hold 2 distinct versions with 5.6.1 recorded most often, but a statically generated page carries the version that built it, and a status page gets rebuilt only when somebody writes an incident or edits the template. A quiet year leaves the marker frozen, so old versions in the data indicate infrequent incidents at least as much as they indicate neglected software.
The list has an obvious readership on both sides of the monitoring market. Incident and observability vendors use it as a displacement target, because every host on it belongs to an organisation that has already decided incident communication matters and has chosen to do the work itself. Reliability researchers use it differently, as a sample of organisations willing to publish outage history in public at all. Either way the value sits in having the whole population in one file, since these hosts are close to impossible to discover by guessing domain names one at a time.
