About Canto

Very little in a web technology profile predates the commercial web. Canto does. Canto GmbH has been in the business of cataloguing digital media since 1990, from well before organising a company's images had anything to do with publishing them online, and a product with that much history behind it tends to be embedded in an organisation rather than trialled by it.

We file the product in our Digital asset management category, and the label needs qualifying. A digital asset management system is a library rather than a publisher. Canto holds the master images, video and documents a company owns, tracks versions and usage rights, and hands assets to the systems that display them, so a website does not run on it the way a website runs on a content management system. What we actually detect is the point where the library touches the public web, an embedded brand portal, a public asset gallery, or media served from the vendor's delivery endpoints.

Presence implies an organisation with more assets than a shared folder can hold and a reason to control who uses them. Marketing teams working with agencies and distributors, franchises pushing approved artwork out to local branches, manufacturers with a catalogue of product photography to keep straight. Licensing is Proprietary and sold by seat and storage tier, so the install sits with a company that has both a governance reason and a budget for one. In practice a domain in this list belongs to a larger organisation than the site alone would suggest.

As of September 2026 we identify the platform on 281 sites, and the count is conservative by the nature of the product. Most deployments face inward. A brand portal often lives on a subdomain nobody links to, behind a login for partners and resellers, or is reached only from an intranet, and none of that is crawlable. Public galleries and embedded viewers are the visible tail of a considerably larger installed base.

The list therefore works best as a qualifier rather than as a market size. Vendors selling into the same stack, creative operations tooling, print and localisation services, product information management, want organisations that already treat their media as an asset to be governed rather than a folder to be shared, and one column answers that. Agencies use it to know what they will be integrating with before a pitch. A competitor sizing its market wants the installed base broken down by industry and country, which is a question about a population and never about a single domain. Checking one company at a time does not produce it.
