Most installations of Atlassian Jira never appear in a web crawl, and the reason is the useful part. Issue trackers live inside companies, behind single sign on, private DNS and corporate networks, where no public fetch reaches them.

What we can see is the exposed remainder: self managed deployments published on a company hostname, customer facing service desks and support portals, and open trackers that projects deliberately leave readable. An instance run by Atlassian on its own hosted domains generally sits outside a per-domain profile of a customer's website, because the tracker is not on the customer's domain at all. So the count on this page is not a measure of how many organisations use the product. The count is a list of organisations whose tracker answers on the public internet, which is a different and in some ways more actionable population.

A tracker on a public hostname also says something about the organisation behind the domain. Publishing one is a deliberate act, taken by open source projects that want contributors to file issues, by vendors running a customer facing service desk, and by teams whose infrastructure predates a tighter security posture. All three groups are worth separating, and the domain itself is usually enough to do it.

Attack surface work is the obvious use. Atlassian Jira is a Java application released in 2002 and sold under a Proprietary licence, and a self managed Java application on a public hostname is a patching obligation with a long published advisory history. Asset inventory vendors, red teams and incident responders need the population rather than the single check, because the question they are asked is which part of our estate, or which part of this sector, is exposed.

Version data supports that work only partly. We record 7 distinct version strings across the sites where the product is detected, which is enough to show that self managed estates run a wide spread of releases rather than a common baseline. A login page reveals less than an authenticated session, so version coverage is uneven and should be read as a hint that narrows a list, not as an inventory you would patch from.

There is a commercial read as well. A published self managed instance identifies an organisation that chose to run its own infrastructure, which is the qualifying condition for hosting migrations, plugin vendors, managed service providers and consultants working in that ecosystem. As of October 2026 the tracker is detected on 91 sites, a modest figure that should be understood as visibility rather than adoption. A per-domain lookup will confirm any single one of them.
