About Wordfence Login Security

Installing a dedicated login plugin is a narrower decision than installing a security suite, and the narrowness is the signal. Wordfence Login Security exists because some administrators want two factor authentication, login page CAPTCHA, and XML-RPC protection on WordPress without also adopting a firewall and a malware scanner. Presence therefore describes an administrator with an opinion. Either a competing security product already occupies the firewall slot and the login surface was the gap left over, or the site is deliberately kept light and the owner picked the single control that answers the credential stuffing traffic every WordPress installation receives whether or not anyone is watching. Either way the operator is the same kind of person, someone who has looked at a login log and made a deliberate choice rather than accepting a default. Version information is where a security plugin list becomes operationally interesting, and also where it needs the most careful reading. Across the installations we can resolve, 26 distinct versions appear, and 2.0.0 recurs across a large share of them. Version numbers here are not read from an admin panel, since no crawler has access to one. Version is inferred from asset URLs that carry it as a query parameter, from readme files that some installations leave publicly readable, and from other fingerprints an installation exposes without meaning to. A site that strips those, or sits behind a cache or optimizer that rewrites asset URLs, resolves to no version at all rather than to a wrong one. So 26 counts the distinct versions actually observable, and the version breakdown covers a subset of the 4,876 sites rather than all of them.

For a single domain the question is simple enough that a lookup answers it. Does this site have login hardening in place. Population questions are different in kind and cannot be assembled one query at a time. Which hosting platforms leave their WordPress fleets on old plugin builds. Whether adoption of a new release happens over days or over quarters. How large the addressable market for a competing two factor product really is, and which part of that market currently pays nothing for the function.

Security vendors sizing a segment, researchers measuring patch behaviour across an ecosystem, and hosting companies auditing what their own customers actually run all need every domain, its plugin, and whatever version could be resolved, together in one file. Patterns in patching behaviour exist between sites rather than inside any one of them, which is exactly the level a per-domain lookup cannot reach.
