About Twenty Eleven

Ask which parts of the web have not been rebuilt in a decade and you need a marker that only existed for a short window. Default WordPress themes are that marker, because each one shipped with a specific core release and stopped being the default when the next arrived. Whoever has one live today made a decision, or more often failed to make one, at a datable moment.

Twenty Eleven is the theme from 2011, and what it offered at the time has since become ordinary: a lightweight and adaptable base an owner could reshape without writing code. A custom header image, a custom background, light and dark colour schemes and a choice of layouts made it a workable starting point, and a showcase page template gave the front page somewhere to put featured content.

As of October 2026 the theme is still live on 10,133 sites, 3,301 of them in United States, mostly on .com domains. The WordPress themes classification comes from the fact that detecting the theme also establishes WordPress underneath, in PHP, recorded here against WordPress.org, published under GPL v2 and still downloadable from the official theme repository, where it is maintained as a community theme. Nothing about it is abandoned in the upstream sense. The sites running it are a different matter.

A live install is best read as evidence of a functioning but unattended site. Somebody renews the domain, somebody pays the hosting bill, the content is presumably still wanted, and yet the presentation layer has not been reconsidered since the site went up. Sites in that state usually carry the same inertia deeper in the stack, in plugin versions, in runtime versions and in whatever integrations were configured once and never revisited, which is why this cohort shows up in both redesign pipelines and vulnerability research.

Inference is not proof, and there are honest exceptions. Some sites run the theme as a parent under a child theme, which means active development sits on top of an old base. Others keep it because it is light and dependency free. Detection reads markup and asset paths, so optimisation plugins, deep customisation and unusual hosting can conceal a theme that is genuinely in use, which makes the count a floor rather than a census.

The commercial reading is straightforward once the caveat is accepted. Hosting companies looking for migration candidates, agencies selling rebuilds, plugin and page-builder vendors looking for upgrade targets, and security teams estimating exposure across a long tail of small sites all want the same thing: a defined population of sites frozen at a known point, sortable by country and suffix, refreshed often enough to show who finally moved.

That last part is what a per-domain lookup cannot give you. Checking one site returns one answer with no context. The download supports the questions that actually drive a plan, which are how large the cohort is, where it clusters, what else those sites run, and how quickly it is disappearing.
