Stimulus est un framework JavaScript modeste créé par Basecamp (aujourd’hui 37signals) pour ajouter du comportement au HTML. Plutôt que de prendre en charge l’intégralité du frontend, Stimulus connecte des objets JavaScript appelés contrôleurs à des éléments HTML existants via des attributs data. Cette approche conserve le HTML comme source de vérité et fonctionne sans friction aux côtés du HTML rendu côté serveur.

Publié en 2018 dans le cadre de la famille d’outils Hotwire, Stimulus est conçu pour les équipes qui privilégient le rendu côté serveur aux architectures d’application monopage. Il est particulièrement populaire dans la communauté Ruby on Rails et s’associe naturellement à Turbo pour une navigation rapide de type HTML-over-the-wire. Stimulus offre une surface d’API minimale et encourage l’amélioration progressive plutôt que le remplacement du HTML par un état géré en JavaScript.
