Sphinx is a full-text search engine originally designed for use with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL. It provides fast, scalable, and relevance-ranked search capabilities that can be integrated into web applications via a native API or a MySQL-compatible protocol. Sphinx was widely adopted by high-traffic websites requiring powerful search beyond what native database full-text search provides.

Over time, Manticore Search emerged as a popular fork of Sphinx, continuing active development. While Sphinx's own development has slowed, it remains in use across many production systems, particularly in legacy PHP and MySQL-based web applications. It supports features such as full-text indexing, attribute filtering, faceted search, and distributed searching.
