Pygments is a widely used open-source syntax highlighting library written in Python. It supports hundreds of programming languages, markup formats, and configuration file types, generating highlighted output in formats including HTML, LaTeX, RTF, and terminal ANSI codes.

Originally created by Georg Brandl in 2006, Pygments is a dependency in numerous documentation generators, code editors, and web applications including Sphinx, Trac, and various wiki engines. Its extensive language support, plugin architecture, and output flexibility have made it the de facto standard for server-side syntax highlighting in the Python ecosystem.
