About ReadAloud
Text to speech on a public web page is almost always somebody else's script. Building it in house means dealing with voice licensing, browser inconsistencies and a control surface nobody wants to design twice, so site owners buy a widget and drop in a tag. ReadAloud is one of those tags, which is why it lands in our index under Widgets rather than under a framework or platform heading.
What the tag implies is a decision rather than a capability. A site loading JavaScript from an external accessibility vendor has chosen a bolt on layer over rebuilding its own markup, and has chosen a Proprietary product with a recurring commercial relationship behind it. Practitioners disagree about how much of a real accessibility gap a widget of this kind closes, but for research purposes the disagreement is beside the point. The tag marks an organisation with budget, a named owner for the problem and usually a compliance driver.
