About Posterous

Nobody has published a new post through Posterous in years, which makes a live detection count for it a strange object. The platform was built around a single trick, publishing a blog entry by sending an email, and it was acquired by Twitter before being wound down. What we match today is residue rather than usage: exported archives that kept the original markup, generator tags left inside copied themes, mirrored pages, parked domains still serving the last version of a site that somebody stopped maintaining.

As of October 2026 that residue is visible on 13 sites. The figure is not a measure of a product in use and describing it that way would be dishonest. Filed as a Blogs that first appeared in 2008 and written in Ruby, the entry now works as a marker for a property that is genuinely useful, which is neglect.

Neglect is measurable and it is worth money to several kinds of buyer. A domain still serving markup from a platform that no longer accepts content is a domain whose owner has not looked at it in a long time. Anyone valuing expiring names, anyone auditing a portfolio inherited through an acquisition, and anyone studying how long dead technology survives on the open web after its vendor disappears is asking a version of the same question. Security teams care for a related reason, because a site that stopped being maintained at a fixed point tends to have stopped being patched at that point too.

The export answers a question a per-domain lookup cannot even frame. Checking one address tells you whether that address still carries the old markup. A downloadable set of every domain where the fingerprint survives, joined against registration dates, hosting and whatever else runs on the same names, tells you where the abandoned web is concentrated, which registrars and hosts carry most of it, and how fast it is disappearing when one export is compared against the next. Our detection here is deliberately conservative. A site that was exported cleanly into a new platform keeps none of the old signatures, and pages rebuilt from the same content will never appear, so the list is a sample of visible decay rather than a full inventory of it.
