About MyFonts

A web font is one of the few elements on a page with a purchase order behind it. Images can be stock, code can be open source, but a licensed typeface means someone chose a brand face, paid for it under a specific set of terms, and is responsible for renewing it. MyFonts is a marketplace where transactions of that kind happen, connecting independent type foundries with the designers and companies that buy from them, and the web font kits it sells are the part that becomes visible on a live site.

Founded in 1999 and now operated by Monotype under Proprietary terms, MyFonts functions as a distribution channel more than as a software product. Detection consequently says less about a site's engineering than about its design procurement. An organisation serving a face licensed through the marketplace has a brand typeface it does not own outright, a budget line that pays for it, and usually an agency or in house designer who specified it. For anyone selling to that role, the signal is unusually well targeted.

As of September 2026 we detect MyFonts on 3,654 sites, and the honest framing is that the figure understates the marketplace's reach by a wide margin. Much of what the marketplace sells never reaches a web page at all, because desktop, application, document and advertising licences cover work that puts no font file on a site. Web font buyers serve the kit from their own site and link it in the CSS, so once a developer repackages or renames those files, nothing left on the page says where the licence came from. The population we can list is therefore the subset whose pages still carry the marketplace's own markers, which tends toward smaller teams, agency built sites and organisations without a dedicated front end performance discipline.

Read that way the list is still valuable, provided the question matches it. Competing font services and foundries use it to find sites already paying for type, which is a far better prospect list than sites using free alternatives. Licensing and compliance teams use it to see how paid web font licences are actually deployed in the wild. Designers and researchers studying typography adoption use it to watch the balance between marketplace faces, free libraries and system stacks shift across snapshots.

None of that is answerable one domain at a time. A lookup tells you which font service a single site uses. The dataset tells you how a purchasing behaviour is distributed: which top level domains and industries pay for type, what content management systems the paying sites run on, which of them carry other commercial design tooling, and whether paid marketplace type is gaining or losing ground against the free libraries. Those are population questions, and they only open up when you hold the whole population at once.
