Mongrel is an early Ruby HTTP server and library developed by Zed Shaw, first released around 2006. It was one of the first production-grade web servers designed specifically for deploying Ruby on Rails applications, offering better performance and stability than the WEBrick server bundled with Rails at the time.

Mongrel operates as a standalone HTTP server that can be clustered behind a load balancer or reverse proxy like Nginx or Apache. Although largely superseded by more modern servers such as Unicorn, Puma, and Passenger in contemporary Rails deployments, Mongrel played a historically significant role in making Ruby on Rails viable for production web applications.
