About Mongrel

Web servers outlive the applications that chose them. A framework gets rewritten, a team disperses, a company is acquired, and the process answering requests keeps answering, because nothing in an infrastructure forces a working deployment to move. Mongrel is a case of exactly that, an HTTP server written in Ruby and dating from 2006, built for a generation of applications that has largely been retired.

One caution belongs before any use of the figure. The name is shared by more than one project. The site recorded against this entry points at a later rewrite that carries the same name with a version suffix attached, and the original server and the rewrite are different software with different architectures and different authors' intentions. Our figure counts a fingerprint match on the name as it appears in server responses. A fingerprint match is not a verified identification of either codebase, and a researcher who needs the distinction has to make it by inspecting hosts directly.

With that stated, the population is genuinely interesting. A server of this vintage still identifying itself in a response header usually indicates a deployment that has not been rebuilt in many years, sitting on an old language runtime, inside a stack nobody has reviewed recently. For a security researcher that is a cohort worth enumerating. For a hosting or migration business it is a list of accounts with a forced decision somewhere ahead of them. For anyone studying how infrastructure actually ages, as opposed to how release notes say it should, it is primary evidence.

Content delivery networks replace it with their own. The visible population of any origin server is a fraction of the real one, and in this case the surviving fraction is biased toward hosts that never had a proxy placed in front of them, which is the same bias that makes the list worth reading.
