About Caddy
Caddy is an open-source, extensible web server written in Go that is designed with simplicity and automatic HTTPS as core principles. Unlike traditional web servers like Apache or Nginx, Caddy automatically obtains and renews TLS certificates from Let's Encrypt by default, making secure-by-default deployments straightforward without additional configuration.
First released in 2015 by Matt Holt, Caddy has gained popularity among developers and DevOps teams for its human-readable Caddyfile configuration syntax and its built-in support for HTTP/2 and HTTP/3. It is commonly used as a reverse proxy, static file server, and API gateway. Caddy is especially popular in containerized environments and among self-hosting enthusiasts. Its commercial licensing for enterprise features is offered through Ardan Labs and Caddy Server commercial plans, while the core server remains open source under the Apache 2.0 license.
