About Media.net

An advertising tag is one of the few things a website publishes about its own business model. Media.net is a sell side advertising platform, which means it fills the ad slots on a publisher's pages and sells that space to advertisers on the publisher's behalf. A publisher who installs the tag has already made a decision worth recording: the site carries paid inventory, the owner will trade screen space for revenue, and there is a payout attached to the traffic.

Our vendor column records Media.net, but the network's own account of its history names a different founder and a later change of ownership, so that field is worth treating with caution. Researchers studying how the open web pays for itself use it to measure how far paid inventory reaches across content categories.

None of that is answerable by looking up one domain at a time. A per-domain lookup tells you whether a single publisher runs Media.net, which you usually already suspect. A downloadable list tells you how many publishers there are, which countries and top level domains they cluster in, which content management systems they run underneath, and how the population moves as networks win and lose publishers. Sizing a market, building an outreach territory, or tracking a competitor's publisher base all need the whole population in one file, joined to the other columns rather than collected by hand.
