About Mastercard

Card marks travel in packs. A checkout that shows one general purpose network almost always shows another beside it, because acceptance is bought as a bundle from an acquirer rather than assembled network by network. For a researcher this has one awkward consequence and one useful one. The awkward consequence is that the bare presence of Mastercard tells you little that its neighbours on the same page do not already tell you. The useful one is that the exceptions carry the information, and exceptions only surface if you can hold the whole population at once.

As of September 2026 we record the mark on 1,144,942 sites. Our index files it under Payment processors, which describes what the imagery and the code on the page are doing rather than the corporate identity of Mastercard International. The detection is shallow by design and we would rather say so plainly. A logo file, a checkout widget, or a processor script that enumerates supported networks is enough to register the mark. None of those proves a settled transaction, and a site can advertise acceptance it no longer has.

What the mark does establish is intent to sell. Domains carrying it are, with few exceptions, live commercial operations with a checkout somewhere behind them, which is a far better starting filter than a keyword search over page text. From there the interesting work is subtractive. Sites that show the mark and no recognised gateway. Sites that show it alongside a platform whose contract is coming up for renewal. Sites where it appeared or vanished between crawls, which is usually an acquirer change surfacing in public before anyone announces it. Sites that show the mark on a checkout page whose surrounding stack has not been touched in years, where the acceptance is inherited from a template rather than chosen. All of those are joins across a population rather than lookups against a domain, and each one describes a segment somebody is already trying to reach with worse data.

Geography is where payment technologies mislead people. Our attribution places 1,077,822 of the sites in Canada, and nobody should read that as a statement about where card accepting merchants are. Country here derives from where the domain and its infrastructure resolve, and marks that ride inside widely reused templates and hosted checkouts inherit the geography of whatever serves them. A milder version of the same effect shapes the extension mix, which concentrates on .com for the ordinary reason that commercial domains prefer it.

Proprietary terms attach to the brand assets, which matters only for redistribution and not for analysis. The network has operated since 1966, and one consequence of that age is that much of the card art on the web is old, inherited, and no longer connected to a live decision by the site owner. Age of the asset is one of the things a full export lets you reason about, because the crawl date and the surrounding stack sit in the same row as the mark itself. Buy the file when your question is about a population and its edges. A lookup answers one domain and says nothing about the market around it, which is why the crawl date matters as much as the detection does. Two exports a quarter apart turn a static list of merchants into a record of who changed their payment setup and when.
