Not every merchant that takes cards takes all of them. Acceptance of American Express carries a different cost structure from the general purpose networks, and merchants weigh that cost against the customers it brings, which makes the mark on a checkout page a decision rather than a default. A decision leaves a more interesting signal behind it than a default ever does.

As of September 2026 we record the mark on 1,061,530 sites, filed under Payment processors. The evidence is what a page shows and what its checkout loads, meaning a logo asset, an SDK, or a processor script enumerating the networks a merchant has enabled. What we cannot see is whether an enabled network is actually settling transactions, whether the merchant renegotiated its rates last quarter, or whether the badge is simply left over from a template nobody has revisited. Presence is a claim of acceptance and deserves to be read as one.

The claim still carries information when it is read carefully. Merchants who accept the mark are more often the ones whose customers expect it, which skews the population towards travel, hospitality, professional services, higher ticket retail and business to business selling rather than towards thin margin volume commerce. A checkout advertising it is telling you something about average order value and about the customer it was built for, without you having to estimate either from page text. For anyone segmenting merchants by margin or by sophistication, the mark is a cheaper and steadier signal than inferring price points from scraped copy.

The country column needs the same caution as any payment technology. Our attribution puts 999,959 of the sites in Canada, which reflects where domains and their delivery infrastructure resolve rather than where the merchants trade. Payment marks are especially prone to this distortion, because they frequently ride inside shared checkout templates that inherit the geography of the platform serving them. Extensions concentrate on .com, which says little beyond the commercial character of the population. American Express operates the network as a Proprietary arrangement and the brand assets carry terms of their own, which matters if you intend to redistribute imagery rather than analyse where it appears.

The comparison set is where a downloadable list earns its price. Sites showing the general purpose marks but not this one are merchants who considered the cost and declined, a defined audience for anyone selling acceptance, pricing or alternative payment rails. Sites that added the mark between two crawls have just changed acquirer or moved up a plan. Sites that dropped it have just cut a cost, and a cost cut at the checkout is rarely the only one happening. None of those are questions about a domain. All of them are differences across a population, and an endpoint answering one domain at a time cannot express a difference. Our export puts the domain, the marks and gateways detected around it, the country and extension fields with the caveat above, and the crawl date in a single row, which is what makes a before and after comparison possible at all.
