About Shop Pay

Shop Pay is a payment button, but as a research signal it behaves like a platform census with a commerce filter already applied. The wallet is built by the company behind a hosted storefront platform, and merchants on that platform get it together with the platform's own payment product. The vendor also documents ways to integrate the wallet into stores selling elsewhere, so finding it on a domain identifies the checkout outright and the underlying stack as a strong tendency rather than a certainty.

As of September 2026 we detect the wallet on 910,522 sites, and 879,823 of those resolve to Canada. A concentration that extreme is an infrastructure fact rather than a market fact. Hosted storefronts answer from the platform's own network, and the platform terminates requests largely in one country, so nearly the whole population geolocates there regardless of where the merchant trades or where the buyer lives. Anyone using our country column to size a national commerce market has to strip hosted platforms out first, or the resulting model will be wrong in a way no later correction can repair.

The honest reading of presence is narrower than it first looks. A wallet shipped as a platform default appears in the markup of stores that have never taken a payment through it, and visibility to a shopper depends on the shopper's country, device and browser. Our record says the integration is served, not that it converted and not that the merchant deliberately switched it on. A researcher who needs deliberate adoption has to look elsewhere. A researcher who needs to know which domains are live storefronts on a particular platform has exactly the right signal in hand.

Shopify Inc. launched the accelerated checkout in 2017 and keeps it Proprietary, which is the strategic point of the whole thing. A returning shopper's details are remembered across every store on the network, so each merchant benefits from every other merchant's customers, and a store outside the network starts every buyer from scratch. For competitive research the network effect is the story. A domain in this list is not simply using a checkout tool, the domain sits inside a network whose value grows with the number of stores in it, and switching cost belongs in the picture for anyone selling an alternative.

What the export gives you that a lookup cannot is the shape of the merchant population. Which stores also run subscription tooling, review widgets or a helpdesk. Which sit on .com and which on national suffixes suggesting a domestic audience the country column would otherwise hide. Which appeared since the last release, which is the closest thing to a feed of new merchants that public web data can produce. Which vanished, which usually means a store closed rather than a checkout changed. Agencies, application developers, logistics providers, payment competitors and analysts all need the population rather than a sample, because the interesting figures are counts and movements in counts, and neither one survives being reduced to one domain at a time.
