The search box on a shop is one of the few places where customers state their intent in their own words, and replacing the platform's built in search is a deliberate decision with a budget attached. Klevu is bought to make that replacement, a hosted Search engines service that takes over query handling, autocomplete and the ranking of results.

Because the swap is deliberate, a detection carries more information than a typical script sighting. A shop that has installed a dedicated search vendor has already concluded that its default search is losing sales, which usually means the catalogue is large enough for browsing to fail and the traffic is high enough for the loss to be measurable. The tag is therefore a reasonable proxy for catalogue size and for a level of ecommerce maturity that cannot be read off the storefront design.

Agencies want merchants who already pay for search and are therefore prepared to pay for merchandising work around it. Investors and analysts want the direction of travel across snapshots, which no per domain query can give them. Checking one storefront tells you what one retailer chose. The export tells you what the category chose, and the second question is the one that supports a decision.
