About Jekyll

Jekyll writes a generator tag into the HTML it produces, which means the version we record is read out of the page rather than guessed at. Very little else in this catalogue offers that. The version column here is therefore worth taking seriously.

The tool is a static site generator written in Ruby and released under the MIT licence, in circulation since 2008. Markdown files and templates go in, a folder of plain HTML comes out, and the folder gets copied onto a host. No database runs. No application code executes when a visitor arrives. A domain we detect it on is cheap to host, hard to compromise through the site itself, and completely dependent on somebody re-running a build whenever the content needs to change.

Rebuild cadence is what the version data actually exposes. We record 62 distinct versions across the population, with 3.10.0 at the head of the distribution. A spread of that width is not fragmentation in the usual sense, because a static site never upgrades itself in place. The version baked into a delivered page is the version installed on the machine that ran the build, frozen on the day it ran. An old generator here does not carry the exposure an old server application would, since nothing is executing, but it does mark a site that nobody has touched in a long while.

The generator tag can also go missing. Minifiers strip comments and meta tags, some themes drop the tag deliberately, and a site published through a different pipeline may never emit it at all. The population is a floor, and the version distribution describes the sites willing to announce themselves rather than every site built this way.

Filing the generator under Static site generator is a convenience rather than a description. There is no admin panel, no editorial workflow and no login. Anyone using our data to assemble a list of manageable content systems should exclude this one deliberately rather than by accident, and anyone selling plugins, hosted editing or migration tooling should know that the buyer here did not want a dashboard in the first place.

As of September 2026 the generator is detectable on 77,283 sites. United States accounts for 69,319 of them and .com leads the suffix breakdown, a distribution shaped by documentation sites, project pages, developer blogs and open source landing pages rather than by commerce.

Who the population contains is the unusual part. Sites here were built by somebody comfortable in a terminal, which makes the list a rough map of technically literate site owners. Developer tool companies, hosting and content delivery vendors and documentation platforms are all selling to exactly that person. A per-domain lookup confirms that one blog is static. The list, with the version column attached, supports a sharper question: which cohort has not been rebuilt in years, and is therefore either abandoned or ready to be moved somewhere else.
