About Infomaniak

A hosting provider in a dataset is usually a technical fact. Infomaniak is closer to a jurisdictional one. The company runs its own data centres in Switzerland and sells to customers who have decided, often deliberately, that their website and their mail should sit under Swiss law rather than in an American cloud region. Choosing the provider is a statement about where data lives as much as a statement about uptime.

The concentration in our file makes the point better than any description. As of September 2026 we record 769,221 sites on the provider, of which 428,174 are in Switzerland, and the domain ending we see against it most often is .ch. A footprint that bound to one country is unusual at this scale. The provider becomes a usable proxy because of it. A domain hosted there is quite likely to belong to a Swiss business, a Swiss association or a Swiss public body, including a good number that use a generic domain ending and would be missed entirely by a filter based on the address alone.

Founded in 1994, the company built a business on the parts of hosting that are hard to differentiate and attached them to something that is not. Privacy, data sovereignty and a European alternative to the large American platforms are the pitch, and the pitch selects the customer. Sites there are more likely to belong to operators who thought about where their data is processed, which is a segmentation criterion that almost no other column in a technology dataset gives you.

National concentration has a second implication that is easy to miss. A provider serving mostly one country is also serving mostly one language, one regulatory regime and one set of business norms, so the population behind these domains is unusually homogeneous compared with the customers of a global platform. Homogeneity is what makes a sample useful for inference, because differences inside the group are more likely to be real than to be artefacts of mixing very different markets together.

Hosting detection identifies whoever answers the request, which is not always whoever owns the machine. Address ranges, nameservers and mail records are the evidence, and a delivery network placed in front of a site can hide the origin completely, so some customers never appear. The company also sells domains, mailboxes, cloud storage and file transfer to people whose website lives somewhere else, and none of those relationships are visible from the web at all. Reseller and agency accounts add a further layer, because one row is a domain and not necessarily an independent buying decision.

Anyone building a Swiss market list, screening suppliers for where their systems are served from, or selling migration into or out of the region needs the whole population rather than a domain-by-domain check.
