A theme is the cheapest decision a WordPress site owner makes and the one that leaves the longest trace. Code, colours and layout arrive together in a single download, stay in place for years, and quietly identify a site long after the business behind it has changed direction.

Hestia is a free multipurpose theme published by ThemeIsle under the GPL v2 license and released around 2016, built to a flat Material influenced look that suited agencies, startups and one page business sites when it appeared. Configuration happens in the WordPress Customizer rather than in code, so the buyer is typically a founder, a freelancer or a small agency rather than an engineering team. WooCommerce support and compatibility with the common page builders extended the same audience into small storefronts.

As of September 2026 the theme runs on 48,514 sites, 13,133 of them on domains registered in United States, with the set weighted toward .com. The revealing number is not the total but the spread of releases behind it. Across that base we see 758 distinct versions live at once, and installs cluster on 3.3.5.

A theme also dates a site in a way that a plugin never does. Plugins get added whenever a need appears, but a theme is chosen once, at launch or at redesign, and replacing it means rebuilding the layout. The release a site sits on therefore approximates the last time anybody made a considered decision about how the site looks, which is a better proxy for neglect or investment than the age of the domain.

Version spread of that width is what happens when updates are optional. A free theme has no renewal to force contact with the vendor, no licence key to expire and no dashboard warning with teeth, so sites drift. Many are abandoned but still hosted, still resolving, still charging someone a monthly invoice. Others are live businesses that never revisited the theme after launch. For security work the distinction matters, because a theme released years ago and never updated inherits every fix it skipped.

The commercial reading is different from the security reading. Presence tells you the site chose a free theme over a premium one, which correlates with budget, with age and with the absence of an in house developer. The theme also places a site inside a known funnel, because ThemeIsle publishes the free edition and sells a paid one with more sections and layout options, so every install is a prospect the vendor already partly owns and a prospect a competing theme or builder can try to take. Agencies selling redesigns, hosting companies selling managed WordPress, plugin vendors selling a paid tier and maintenance services all want that same segment, and the theme and release pair narrows it considerably better than a hosting signal alone.

A single domain check confirms the theme on one site. The dataset gives the population and the axes to slice it by, including country, suffix, hosting provider, release and whatever else runs alongside. Questions of the useful kind only exist at that scale. How many storefronts sit on a free theme and an ecommerce plugin at the same time. Which hosts carry a concentration of unmaintained installs. How quickly a base of this size adopts a release after it ships. Detection reads asset paths, stylesheet headers and markup fingerprints, so a child theme, a caching plugin that rewrites paths or aggressive minification can hide a genuine install. Undercounting is the likelier error, and release strings come from public asset URLs, which a site can suppress without changing what it actually runs.
