About EZproxy

A research library spends most of its acquisitions budget on content it does not host. Journals, databases and reference collections live on publishers' servers, and the licence says which people may read them. Off campus that becomes an awkward engineering problem, since the publisher recognises the institution by network address and a student at home has the wrong one. EZproxy is the answer libraries settled on, a proxy that authenticates a patron against institutional credentials and then fetches licensed content on their behalf, so the request arrives at the publisher wearing the library's identity.

Understanding that flow explains why a match in our data is a strong signal about the organisation behind the domain. A proxy of this kind is only worth running if there are paid subscriptions to protect and a defined population entitled to use them. Universities, colleges, hospital and medical libraries, government research bodies and corporate information centres fit the description, and very little else does. Enumerating those institutions from public sources is otherwise slow work, which is what gives even a short list of Reverse proxies matches practical value.

The software dates from 1999 and OCLC develops and licenses it now, a durable piece of infrastructure that still does the job it was written for, and it remains Proprietary, so a deployment implies a maintained institutional contract rather than a hobby install. As of October 2026 we record it on 5 sites.

Anyone using that figure should understand its shape. Proxies typically run on a dedicated hostname rather than on the institution's main site, the recognisable signature appears mainly on a login screen, and a growing number of libraries have moved to federated identity, where access is granted through a single sign on flow that leaves no proxy trace at all. Our count is therefore a subset of remote access deployments and not a measure of how many institutions license electronic content.

Even so, the list answers something a per domain lookup cannot. Checking one library tells you how that library handles remote access. The set tells a publisher or content platform which institutions still route readers through a proxy, which have migrated away, and where an authentication or access management vendor has room to sell. Population level questions need the population.
