Acerca de EZproxy

Una biblioteca de investigación gasta la mayor parte de su presupuesto de adquisiciones en contenido que no aloja. Las revistas, las bases de datos y las colecciones de referencia están en los servidores de las editoriales, y la licencia dice qué personas pueden leerlas. Fuera del campus eso se convierte en un problema técnico incómodo, porque la editorial reconoce a la institución por su dirección de red y un estudiante desde casa tiene la dirección equivocada. EZproxy es la respuesta por la que optaron las bibliotecas, un proxy que autentica al usuario contra las credenciales institucionales y después recoge en su nombre el contenido con licencia, de modo que la petición llega a la editorial con la identidad de la biblioteca.

Entender ese recorrido explica por qué una coincidencia en nuestros datos es una señal potente sobre la organización que hay detrás del dominio. Un proxy de este tipo solo merece la pena si hay suscripciones de pago que proteger y una población definida con derecho a usarlas. Las universidades, los centros de estudios superiores, las bibliotecas hospitalarias y médicas, los organismos públicos de investigación y los centros de documentación corporativos encajan en la descripción, y muy poco más lo hace. Enumerar esas instituciones a partir de fuentes públicas es, por lo demás, un trabajo lento, y eso es lo que da valor práctico incluso a una lista corta de coincidencias en la categoría Reverse proxies.

El software data de 1999 y hoy lo desarrolla y licencia OCLC, una pieza de infraestructura duradera que sigue haciendo aquello para lo que se escribió, y sigue siendo Proprietary, así que un despliegue implica un contrato institucional vigente y no una instalación de aficionado.
