Sobre EZproxy

Uma biblioteca de investigação gasta a maior parte do seu orçamento de aquisições em conteúdos que não aloja. As revistas, as bases de dados e as coleções de referência residem nos servidores das editoras, e é a licença que diz quem as pode ler. Fora do campus isso torna-se um problema de engenharia incómodo, porque a editora reconhece a instituição pelo endereço de rede e um estudante em casa tem o endereço errado. O EZproxy é a resposta em que as bibliotecas assentaram, um proxy que autentica o leitor com as credenciais da instituição e depois vai buscar o conteúdo licenciado em seu nome, para que o pedido chegue à editora com a identidade da biblioteca.

Perceber esse fluxo explica por que razão uma correspondência nos nossos dados é um sinal forte sobre a organização que está por trás do domínio. Um proxy destes só vale a pena se houver subscrições pagas a proteger e uma população definida com direito a usá-las. Universidades, institutos politécnicos, bibliotecas hospitalares e médicas, organismos públicos de investigação e centros de informação empresariais encaixam na descrição, e muito pouco mais encaixa. Enumerar essas instituições a partir de fontes públicas é, de outro modo, um trabalho lento, e é isso que dá valor prático mesmo a uma lista curta de correspondências na categoria Reverse proxies.

O software data de 1999 e é hoje a OCLC que o desenvolve e licencia, uma peça de infraestrutura duradoura que continua a fazer aquilo para que foi escrita, e mantém-se com licença Proprietary, por isso uma instalação implica um contrato institucional em vigor e não uma instalação de amador.
