Una biblioteca di ricerca spende la maggior parte del suo budget per le acquisizioni in contenuti che non ospita. Riviste, banche dati e collezioni di consultazione risiedono sui server degli editori, e la licenza stabilisce chi è autorizzato a leggerli. Fuori dal campus questo diventa un problema tecnico scomodo, perché l’editore riconosce l’istituzione dall’indirizzo di rete e uno studente che si collega da casa ne ha uno sbagliato. Lo strumento EZproxy è la soluzione su cui le biblioteche hanno finito per convergere: un proxy che autentica l’utente con le credenziali istituzionali e poi recupera per suo conto i contenuti in licenza, così la richiesta arriva all’editore presentandosi con l’identità della biblioteca.

Capire questo flusso spiega perché una corrispondenza nei nostri dati è un segnale forte sull’organizzazione che sta dietro al dominio. Ha senso gestire un proxy di questo tipo solo se ci sono abbonamenti a pagamento da proteggere e una popolazione definita che ha diritto di usarli. Università, college, biblioteche ospedaliere e mediche, enti pubblici di ricerca e centri di documentazione aziendali corrispondono alla descrizione, e ben poco altro vi corrisponde. Censire queste istituzioni a partire da fonti pubbliche è altrimenti un lavoro lento, ed è questo che dà valore pratico anche a un breve elenco di corrispondenze nella categoria Reverse proxies.

Il software risale al 1999 e oggi è OCLC a svilupparlo e a concederlo in licenza: è un’infrastruttura duratura, che svolge ancora il compito per cui è stata scritta, ed è tuttora distribuita con licenza Proprietary, per cui un’installazione presuppone un contratto istituzionale attivo e non un uso amatoriale. Chi utilizza questo dato dovrebbe capirne la forma. I proxy di norma girano su un hostname dedicato anziché sul sito principale dell’istituzione, la firma riconoscibile compare soprattutto su una schermata di login, e un numero crescente di biblioteche è passato all’identità federata, in cui l’accesso viene concesso tramite un flusso di single sign-on che non lascia alcuna traccia di proxy. Il nostro conteggio è quindi un sottoinsieme delle installazioni per l’accesso remoto e non una misura di quante istituzioni abbiano in licenza contenuti elettronici.

Ciononostante, l’elenco risponde a qualcosa che una verifica sul singolo dominio non può dire. Controllare una biblioteca dice come quella biblioteca gestisce l’accesso remoto. L’insieme dice a un editore o a una piattaforma di contenuti quali istituzioni instradano ancora i lettori attraverso un proxy, quali hanno cambiato sistema e dove un fornitore di sistemi di autenticazione o di gestione degli accessi ha margine per vendere.
