About Amazon EC2

The number on this page needs a caveat before it needs an explanation. Amazon EC2 is infrastructure that hides well. A site can run entirely on it and show no sign at all, because the address a visitor resolves belongs to a load balancer, a CDN edge or a proxy sitting in front of the instance and answering on its behalf.

What we can detect is the population that does not hide: hostnames resolving into address ranges the provider publishes, instance style naming left behind in DNS, and headers that survive the trip to the browser. As of September 2026 that comes to 19,542 sites. The figure is a floor and not a market share, and reading it as the size of the Amazon compute business would be wrong by a margin we cannot honestly estimate.

The visible subset is not a random sample either, and the bias is useful rather than fatal. A site whose DNS points straight at an instance is usually one somebody set up by hand and has never moved behind a managed edge. Small deployments, legacy applications, staging environments that outlived their purpose and single server installations run by teams without a platform group are all over represented. For a managed hosting provider, a DevOps consultancy or a CDN vendor, an over representation of exactly those sites makes a better prospecting list than a complete census would.

The service has been available since 2006 and remains Proprietary to Amazon, which is worth saying only because it set the terms for the whole IaaS category that followed. Renting compute by the hour replaced buying it, and most hosting technologies we track since then either compete with that model or sit on top of it.

A per domain lookup tells you where one site resolves today, and will be wrong tomorrow if the site moves behind a proxy. An export answers the questions that only exist at population scale: which top level domains and countries carry directly exposed instances, what software those instances serve, and which of them look like unmanaged infrastructure rather than a considered architecture. Migration vendors, researchers hunting exposed origins and anyone sizing the self managed end of the cloud market are asking versions of the same question, and none of them can answer it one domain at a time.
