Myanmar experienced a dramatic digital transformation between 2014 and 2020, when mobile phone ownership and internet access surged following market liberalization and the entry of international telecoms operators Telenor and Ooredoo. Internet penetration reached approximately 65% before the 2021 military coup, which led to widespread internet shutdowns, social media blocks, and significant disruption to the digital economy. Despite ongoing political instability, mobile internet usage remains widespread, particularly through Facebook, which became deeply embedded in the country's online ecosystem.
