Nearly everything we detect on a website is free. WP Rocket is not, and that single fact changes what its presence means. A site running it went through a purchase decision, entered card details, and has renewed at least once, which is a firmer commercial signal than any amount of traffic estimation. For a researcher building a list of sites that spend money on their own infrastructure, a paid plugin is a better filter than the apparent size of the site.

As of September 2026 we detect it on 1,066,724 sites. Our taxonomy files the plugin under Caching because it lives inside a content management system rather than beside it, although the work it does is caching, asset optimisation and delivery tuning rather than anything to do with content. WP Media has sold it since 2013 under a Proprietary licence, distributed directly rather than through a free public repository, which is part of why its footprint is easy to underestimate. Detection relies on artefacts the plugin leaves in delivered pages, and a site that has configured it aggressively can end up harder to see than a site that has barely configured it at all.

The version field is where a paid plugin becomes genuinely informative. We resolve 270 distinct versions across the population, and 3.18.3 is one that recurs heavily. Updates for commercial plugins are gated behind an active licence, so a version that has fallen well behind the current release is evidence of a lapsed renewal rather than evidence of a cautious upgrade policy. A lapsed renewal is a live commercial situation. The owner has already proved willingness to pay for performance tooling and has since stopped paying, which is a much warmer starting position than an owner who has never bought anything of the kind.

Interpreting the field needs care in one direction. Version strings are visible only when the plugin exposes them, and a hardened or heavily proxied configuration will hide the string while still serving the plugin's output, so the sites we can date are a subset of the sites we can identify. Absence of a version is not evidence of currency. Where a version is present it is dependable, because the artefact carrying it is generated by the plugin itself rather than guessed at from surrounding markup.

United States carries 490,789 of the detections and the extension mix concentrates on .com, which reflects where paid tooling for this publishing platform sells rather than where the platform itself is used. The commercially useful queries are all population queries. Which sites pair the plugin with a host whose own stack already performs the same job, an overlap that is a cancellation risk to one party and a switching opportunity to another. Which sites fell behind between two crawls. Which agencies deploy it across every client they touch, so that one conversation reaches a portfolio rather than a page. Our export carries the domain, the version where it is exposed, the surrounding stack and the crawl date. A single domain lookup answers none of those questions, because none of them is about a single domain.
