A merchant can redesign a storefront twice and the wallet buttons will survive both rebuilds, because whoever owns the checkout template is the one person with a reason not to touch it. Payment code that works is left alone. Visa Checkout is a clear case of the habit, since the standalone wallet brand has already been folded into the card network's later click to pay effort while the integration markup carries on being served.

The figure counts integrations still present in delivered pages, not wallet transactions that still complete, and for a service in wind down the gap between those two things is the whole story. A checkout page can advertise an option that no longer works, and only the merchant's own logs would reveal it.

The entry is recorded against Visa Inc. under a Proprietary licence and dates from 2014, a moment when card networks were building consumer wallets of their own to compete with the wallets that had grown up outside the banking system. The strategy did not hold in that form. Network branded wallets converged on a shared industry flow instead, and the individual brands became front ends to it, which leaves the markup on these sites as an archaeological layer of a strategy the industry has moved past.

Two audiences care about the resulting list. Payment providers want merchants running deprecated or abandoned checkout code, because a stale integration is a concrete opening for a conversation about replacing it. Risk and engineering teams want the same list from the other side, since dead payment scripts on a live checkout are a maintenance signal about the whole page and usually sit beside other unmaintained third party code.

Detection here has a specific weakness worth naming. Wallet buttons are often injected by a tag manager or drawn after the page loads, so an integration can exist in a merchant's configuration and never appear in the HTML we read. The reverse happens too, and a leftover script can sit in a page that no longer offers the option at all. Both errors point in opposite directions, which is why the honest description of the number is the set of sites whose delivered pages still reference the wallet.

The population question is the one a per-domain check cannot answer. Which merchants, in which markets and on which ecommerce platforms, are still shipping this code, how they cluster by platform vendor, and what the persistence says about how slowly the payments industry actually retires a standard once the announcement has been made.
