About Vignette
Enterprise content management sold in the nineties came with a promise that a site built on it would still be running a decade later, and Vignette is one of the few places where that promise can be checked against live data. Our record dates the product to 1996 and lists Java as the implementation language, which places it in the first generation of Java content platforms sold to large organisations.
The vendor field is the interesting part. We list Open Text Corporation as the owner while the product's own domain still carries the Vignette name, which is the usual signature of a product line that outlived the company that built it. For a researcher, a detection is therefore rarely a live purchase decision. Nobody is buying this platform now. What a fingerprint marks is an installation commissioned long ago, which survived at least one change of vendor ownership and has not yet been worth replacing.
As of October 2026 we detect Vignette on 10 sites, and a number of that size describes a decay curve rather than a market. Long-lived deployments concentrate in organisations where replacing a content platform means renegotiating contracts, retraining editorial staff and migrating an archive with legal retention rules attached to it. The count deserves a caveat that applies to most platforms of this age. Fingerprints come from URL patterns, cookie names and headers that a reverse proxy or a caching layer can hide completely, and rewriting old URLs is a standard early step in any modernisation project, so a site still running the platform behind a friendlier front end will be missed. Treat the figure as a lower bound on surviving installations. Treat the empty version column as a reminder that we cannot tell which release a given site is on, which matters if you are trying to separate a maintained legacy deployment from an abandoned one.
