About UNIX

Very little on the web actually runs the operating system this name refers to, and understanding why is where the value of the record starts. UNIX dates from 1969, and the trademark today belongs to The Open Group under a Proprietary arrangement, so the word describes a certification and a design lineage more than any shipping product. Our crawler does not inspect kernels. When a web server volunteers the platform family it was compiled for, and that family is a UNIX or UNIX-like build, we record UNIX against the host. Almost every machine behind such a banner is running Linux or a BSD derivative in practice.

As of September 2026 the label appears on 2,775,457 sites, and the geography is where the signal stops being trivial. Germany carries 2,513,579 of them, and much of what remains sits under .de. No plausible reading of that distribution says one country runs more UNIX-like servers than everybody else. What the distribution says is that a single hosting market ships a default server configuration that prints the platform token, while other markets ship configurations that suppress it. We file the entry under Operating systems, but the map it draws is a map of how talkative servers are, not of what they run.

A server that still announces its platform is a server whose operator never trimmed the response header, and that habit travels with other habits. Banner disclosure is a minor finding on a single host and a useful sorting key across a population, because the hosts that leak it tend to share a control panel, a provisioning template, and an upgrade cadence. Researchers who study attack surface run the same reasoning in reverse, treating a verbose header as an invitation to fingerprint further.

A per-domain lookup answers a question nobody really has. Knowing that one site announces a UNIX-like platform changes no decision anybody was about to make. The downloadable list answers the question underneath it: which populations of hosts share the configuration, how they cluster by country and by domain suffix, and what other server software appears alongside them in the same records. Cross those columns and the provider fingerprints separate out, which is what makes the file usable for sizing a migration campaign, scoping a security study, or estimating how much of a national hosting market runs from one template.

The limits deserve stating plainly rather than in a footnote. Detection here is opt-in on the server side, so absence proves nothing whatsoever. A large share of UNIX-like hosts on the internet never identify themselves in a response header, and they are missing from the count by configuration rather than by oversight. The label also flattens genuinely different systems into a single word, since a modern Linux distribution, a BSD, and a certified commercial UNIX are all capable of producing the same token. Treat the record as evidence about configuration and hosting provenance, which it supports well, and not as a platform census, which it cannot support at all. Read that way it stays useful for years, because the population of servers willing to describe themselves changes slowly and predictably.
